The Proposed State Soil of Tennessee

[A profile of a Dickson soil, which is the Proposed State Soil of Tennessee.]Soils of the Dickson series are the proposed state soil of Tennessee. Dickson soils were selected by NRCS and our partners in Tennessee as the State Soil, and monoliths of the Dickson soils were submitted to the Smithsonian and the Soil Survey Division for their displays of State Soils.

The Dickson soils consist of very deep, moderately well drained soils formed in a silty mantle 2 to 4 feet thick. Most occurrences of Dickson are on nearly level uplands. The Dickson soil is characterized by a firm and brittle fragipan that occurs 24 to 36 inches below the soil surface. The Dickson soils are classified as fine-silty, siliceous, thermic Glossic Fragiudults.

See a graphic showing the counties in Tennessee where the Dickson soil is located.
